moments from a wedding

Posted on November 16, 2009 in Uncategorized

this past weekend was a blur of activity. but a few flower moments stand out. there were 12 nosegays , 2 for the mothers, 2 for the flowergirls and 8 for friends and family to carry. each were unique, each were beautiful. the bridal bouquet was big and lush, with red france roses, red charm peonies, antique hydrangeas ,nandina greens and oak leaves.

So says:I used spreadsheets religiously to keep track of vendors I talked to and their prices. In fact I know another bride getting married in the same place I did, so I sent her the list of all the vendors I found! I had a great venue coordinator also who did a lot of work for me so I only had to drop off decorations and the staff set them up. I also used weddingwire.com because they have a huge checklist that tells you when things need to be done.

Overbudget, don’t underbudget. Try to keep things simple, because they’ll naturally balloon on their own. STAY ORGANIZED…this will lead to less stress. Let other people help you when they volunteer, you’re only one person. Don’t expect your groom to want to help very much, they don’t usually. You cannot please everyone, so don’t even try–please yourself and your Fiance.Lastly, a great way to keep things orderly and in one place is Theknot.com Happy planning!

My fiance and I are expcrieneing a bit of a role reversal, in that I am in the minority of grooms, one who is the primary planner/coordinator of our upcoming wedding. My fiance has great taste and is involved with all major decisions, but is also an extremely busy professional, so I was happy to step up as the experienced party planner, doing the homework and pre-negotiating with vendors, before my fiance and I together make final selections of vendors and the plan. However, I had never planned a wedding before, so I've bought many books and read lots of websites and paged through many magazines (I don't think I can look at another magazine ad of a bride-model laying horizontal on a couch without snickering). Virtually everything is written for the bride who typically plans the wedding which to me means there is a heavy emphasis on decorations and flowers and invitations and linens and color schemes it was all driving me crazy as a guy trying to put together a wedding plan that is simply fun and action oriented, while still allows for nice things. I've attended many dozens of weddings over the years and I've kept an eye on what makes weddings enjoyable and memorable: keep it festive, keep guests involved, and make sure there is time for the happy couple to spend time with each of the guests. I never saw any correlation with the size of the party, the location, the decorations, even the food quality (and I'm a big foodie), with how successful and fun the wedding was. Given this perspective, I looked and looked for wedding planning advice in all the books and magazines and websites, hoping to find action oriented advice for having a festive wedding reception frankly, I found little useful advice. Finally, just three months before our upcoming wedding, I have found the book I really needed on the recommendation of a wedding DJ friend (who lives and works in another state), I ordered Peter Merry's book, which I have found to be chock full of actionable ideas from an experienced wedding DJ/entertainment director. He focuses on the concept of entertainment and leaves decorations and other more frivolous things to the other books. He is a welcome voice, a rare male perspective in wedding planning books, that a planning groom, and presumably planning brides as well, needs. I've already made adjustments to the reception agenda and found validation with some activity ideas we already had in place. Rest assured, there will be great food and many touches of elegance in the design of our wedding, but I am now more confident as ever we will have a truly festive wedding with Peter Merry's advice influencing our plan. Many thanks to the author the advice is easily 10 times worth the cover price of the book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone planning their wedding.

48 hrs. before the wedding

Posted on November 12, 2009 in Uncategorized

before the bouquets and the boutonnieres and the centerpieces, comes the basement and the boxes. this is where the flowers are delivered and cleaned, stem by stem, and processed, different water temperatures for different flowers. some stems need a clean cut with a knife, others can handle a sharp pair of clippers, but none need or want to be cut by scissors. ever. during the week, bucket after bucket of stems are carried upstairs and arranged for sale or designer use. tomorrow we are so busy, we will troop downstairs, knives and coffees in hand to join the flowers.

I don’t know that you can buy from the warehouse, but even if you buy unarranged stems from a flower shop, you still save money if you arrange them yourself. HOWEVER, one caveat, think about whether you have the time and patience to take this on. Remember that you will want to have fresh flowers for your wedding so that means you will need to prepare them likely the day before. Will you have time to do that will all of the other things you need to take care of? Also, are you knowledgable enough regarding flower arranging to do the bouquets? Calla lillies are simple in that you can just put your two chosen colors in a bouquet by themselves, though. They look nice without filler flowers.

I need suggestions on wedding flowers. I was trying to plan for an elegant but in my budget wedding. I am only having one bridesmaid, and possibly a matron of honor (if my sis who hasn’t had a wedding chooses to participate). One groomsman poss best man. I don’t know a flower girl or a ring bearer. The facilatator from my church wants me to have a flowre girl, ring bearer, and at least three ushers and three hostess. Now she has said I need corsages, boutineers (spelling) and I don’t know how to budget for this. I don’t know how much wrist corsages cost and boutineers and I can’t afford to spend over a thousand dollars on florwers. Any ideas on how to cut florist cost. I was thinking of making at least the bridesmaid bouquet and my throwaway bouquet from Michaels but she my facilatator got a little racial and stated african americans buy their flowers making them is too cheap. Please help me. I am getting married in April 08

Buy fresh flowers in Walmart and make them your self. Enroll the help of crafty relatives or friends. orHave silk flowers instead. As far as the church attentdant, be honest and tell her that you are looking into a more simple affair and that you don’t need all of that. It seems like your church “buddy” is trying to bully you into something completly unnecesary, how tacky is that? You don’t have to have a flower girl or ring bearer. They are out of style as a matter of fact. You need a bouquet for you, one for your bridesmaid and MOH, and bouttonniers for the groom, groomsman, best man, mother of the bride and father of the bride, That’s it.I’ve never hear of corsages for attendants!!! Do what you can afford and don’t let nobody twist your arm and intimidate you into getting additional and unnecesary expenses just because they need to feel superior giving you so called “advice”. Do not listen to her and stand up to her and tell then that you have other plans in mind and that it’s ultimately YOUR choice what to do at your own wedding. Good luck

Posted by auto insurance quotes on 04/14/12
Hello,I need some thoughts, advice, suggestions please! Here it goes… So, I’m getting married in about a month, and I thought I had my flower arrangements pretty much set until my design session yesterday. We were wrapping up the session until I noticed a price discrepancy of $50 in the contract, yes, it’s not a huge amount but I mentioned it. The who was helping us mentioned it to the owner and he became very irate and mentioned that if I signed the paperwork for the wrong amount then I have to pay the “wrong” amount??? Crazy, I know. The nice who was helping us asked him to please fix it for us, and so he did after she mentioned it but he already treated me so rudely. So, being all stressed out because my wedding is in a month, when she came back I began to cry and told her how rude he was and I didn’t deserved that. She apologized but kept saying he didn’t mean it. My maid of honor who was also at the design session was there and mentioned that he was a jerk and he treated me badly.Few moment later a guy comes into the flower shop and says “who owns the honda parked in the back?”, my MOH states she does and he follows to say that someone keyed the car. Ok, to make the long story short, the owner of the shop, who made me cry for treating me so badly was the one who keyed her car!! When the owner came outside, the witness pointed him out and said that it was him to he saw key her car, crazy!! My called the cops ASAP, and they came and we all saw the keyed scartches on the car.The owner ultimately got arrested and the nice who helped us she gave me all my money back but still defended him that he did not do it because she believes her boss. Horror story, i know… To finish it off, she tells me at the end that they want to compensate me for the aggravation by paying for all the flowers in my wedding and whatever I wanted, and even double the flowers, for free..My who’s car is keyed will be compensated for the damage and the owner who KEYED the car is saying he still didn’t do it (bs!) but will compensate because it happened in his property..Now, my question to you all is if I should go with it and accept the flowers being done for free as promised, or just dont deal with them?? Only reason why i’m thinking of going with them is bc it will be done for free and my future hubby and I can save money, and also bc i know they get a lot of business from my venue so they do not want to look bad because they know i will tell.Thoughts????

the beehive

Posted on October 21, 2009 in Uncategorized

we have a small spot in the store packed full of treasures, both antique and vintage. old wicker chairs, etchings, prints, vases and plates. it's called the beehive after a consignment store marnie had years ago. before she was a florist she was a collector. well, she still is a collector, and occasionally she brings in a some pieces to sell. i grabbed a few of them and filled them with bits of berries, a few roses, some autumn leaves. we love when people bring their own treasures to the shop and let us do the same. also ,so easy to do yourself. here i've filled an antique glass bottle with a favorite new rose, chili, a touch of tonya berry and a leaf. a toby jug has just 2 rodeo roses , a touch of hypericum berry and a few holland mums. a blue and white gravy boat has 2 coffee break and i chili rose,a few bronze mums, leaves and ornamental chili peppers. simple, personal and charming.

Hi. I’m trying to get an idea of how much money I saved (if any) by doing my own wedding flowers (middle to high quality silks). Anybody out there (brides, florists, etc) who can make an educated guess of how much the following list of items would have cost me if I had used a traditional wedding florist? All of the flowers used were roses, and some filler flowers and fall leaves were used as accents.1 very large round bride bouquet with 2-3 dozen large open roses, fall leaves, and filler flowers, with handle fully wrapped in satin ribbon 2 large round maid of honor bouquets with 5 open roses and 10 rose buds, few fall leaves, some filler flowers, handles fully wrapped in satin ribbon.5 medium sized bridesmaids bouquets containing 4 open roses, and 8 rosebuds, few fall leaves, some filler flower handles fully wrapped in satin ribbon.3 mother wrist corsages, 2-3 roses each11 single rose bud boutonnieres 1 groom boutonniere with 2 rosebuds, accent flowers16 pew markers, containing satin bows and 3 roses each4 medium sized church arrangements containing about 2 dozen roses each2 small swags and 2 garlands, 4 additional decoration bouquetsFYI, I already have the flowers. The list above is everything that I have and have already done. The bouquets look real from a few feet away. Actually, a few months ago I bought a bouquet of fresh orange roses from the grocery store and then compared them to my silks and they looked extremely similar…actually the silks looked better because their color was more vibrant. Honestly, flowers weren’t all that important to me…I mean I want them to be nice but I didn’t want the flowers to be one of the biggest expenses of my wedding. There were other places I would rather spend money, on things that mean more to me. So that is why I went with silks. But I’ve just been wondering what I would have paid ballpark for all of those fresh roses if I had gone through a florist.

if it's thursday.....

Posted on October 16, 2009 in Uncategorized

it must be california. years ago, john and marnie were in san francisco checking out the floral scene. they happened upon a fabulous flower wholesaler full of the biggest, brightest flowers. a deal was struck and every thursday we get a BIG box from that wholesaler filled with, we know not, until we open it. the only requirement is that it must

be cool or beautiful, hopefully a combo of both. here are a few shots taken down under (the basement) of this week's finest. forgive the picture quality , hopefully the flowers speak for themselves. speaking are: incredibly scented garden roses, peppers verging in color from black to brown to orange and richly colored boston ivy leaves.

You really make it appear so simple in addition to your presentation nevertheless I to locate this subject to be really one factor which I believe I could by no indicates fully grasp. No… it’s actually a layer of the same shot processed two different ways. In the first one, I processed it normally, with a blue but not overly blue sky. In the other, I processed it so the colors were really vivid. Then I layered the vivid one over the normal one at about 50% until I got something I liked. In other words, I fiddled and fiddled and then hit ‘save’.

another day in paradise

Posted on October 14, 2009 in Uncategorized

another day surrounded by grasses and berries, rosehips, leaves of all colors. one of today's arrangements was a subtle fall mixture of dahlias, roses, hydrangeas, hybrid lilies, asters and wax flowers, to create an anniversary arrangement for a garden designer to his wife. the other called for a funky design in fall colors, no roses or lilies. no problem! the last shot is one of our outdoor displays: bunches of curly willow tips, leaves, pumpkins both real and woven , yellow dogwood branches all welcome you to coflo (as we call it).

hi all, this is jane from the design room. since john doesn't have the time to keep up with the blog, i've offered to give him a hand. i'll be posting pictures of the newest flowers, our favorite arrangements, the most beautiful bridal bouquet, which is every one we do, and whatever piece of jewelry i would want to own. let's start with a few fall arrangements from october .small glass cubes of monochromatic calla lilies with seeded eucalyptus, used for cocktail tables. the next vase is an explosion of fall, i don't know if i can name everything, there are calla lilies, several varieties of roses, bittersweet, rosemary, antique hydrangeas, jasmine, quince fruit, and hybrid lilies. whew. let me catch my breath, more to come!

guinevere: Neutral colors like white can eenplomcmt turquoise. Light yellow and light pink can also make them look good and neat. White, gray silver and orange can also eenplomcmt your turquoise wedding color. You can even try a bolder color combination by choosing red, orange and deep purple. hope this helps and good luck.

Drama in the Lobby !

Posted on August 10, 2009 in Uncategorized

Today' effort is one of several created each Monday to place in the lobbies of offices, usually trade associations or law firms in downtown DC. This one features proteas, the unusual grayish balls of a variety of echtoveria with which we're not familiar(from our personal supplier of weird stems from California) , and big ti-leaves, all high-lighted by the bright yellow calla lilies tipped with red -- again, emphasis on the unusual. The second photo shows a close-up of the center of the design, where visual depth is enhanced by the veritcal lines of the callas. Objective is to develop a touch of tropical mystery recognizing that most viewers are hurrying by anyway and won't have time to study the relations of darks and lights.

Typical upscale Design

Posted on August 7, 2009 in Uncategorized

Here's an example of a daily upscale ($95) design from our shop. Obviously, it capitalizes on the fantastic array of hydrangea colored heads now available. Because it's summertime, of course, there are the zingy zinneas, seveal "green envy" ones. The large garden roses compliment the basic composition, surrounded by the wildy-stringy jasmine stems. Tucked in center (see lower photo) are some vanda orchids and naked-lady lilies. The "brown" touch on the edge is actually brown-growing eucalyptus, to match the seeded eucalyptus on the other side of the design. And eagle-eyed flower lovers can also probably spot the stem or two of clematis added to round out the design. Putting this all together is the designer's task, and this one has been accomplished especially well!

Day's Work: Bridal Bouquets

Posted on August 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

We're often asked to show what floral designs are created day-by-day at the flower shop. Today a wedding order included nine bridesmaids' (eight plus Maid of Honor) bouquets. Pictured are a few, before the final hot-pink satin trailing ribbons and bow have been attached. Each is composed of four different, huge pink or hot-pink hydrangea heads from Columbia (SouthAmerica) and Holland. Riding astride the pillowy hydrangea clouds are four pink or hot-pink large "field" roses surrounding one centered, white/green rose. The wedding party then took each bouquet and placed it into a glass vase with water (which we supplied) in the center of the nine sit-down tables at the reception.

Pots, Pots & More Pots: Choices

Posted on August 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

Summertime provides a good excuse to do some house-cleaning! We've been attacking our storeroom where "extras" get stashed, so now there's a plethora of pots available at very reasonable prices -- see the pix as example. Especially in smaller apartment-house settings, selection of the pot is almost as important as the flowers contained therein -- come brouse among the best!
...........Are there guidelines or "preferences" in containers? No easy answer here. Obviously, there are some pots that are so lovely themsevles, the flowers need be only de minibus. An example is on our web site among the first favorites -- take a look!
.............And then the relation of the container to its location is important -- a huge tall vase in a tiny corner seldom works. And then there's the relation of the floral design to the vase, too. A rule of thumb is that flowers should be roughly twice as tall as the container, but there's deviation from the "rule" more than not.
......................What's best? An afternoon at the National Gallery should generate ideas about your own likes and dislikes, your sense of form, your appreciation of depth and shadow, etc. That's what makes the floral design in the pot fun to get, to appreciate, and to cherish as a memory -- just like the first kiss, the memory can often grow more fond with time when you've recieved or given lovely flowers in a lovely vase!

I just love flowers, especially roses, I find it very romantic despite its thorns. I “won” the heart of my then mother in law to be when I brought her a dozen roses one Mother’s Day many years ago. But my secret wish up to this time is to receive flowers from my husband. I got flowers from my son & daughter in law in Vegas two years ago for my birthday. I’m not sure if Frederick MD Florist has a contact office or person here but I think my son & wife ordered the flowers thru the internet. My son & his wife had a good laugh when I told them about my secret wish, & that all I ever got from their dad was a “talunang manok, fighting cocks being his one great love, aside from me, of course,( I would like to think.) Well, love comes in many faces.

I want to know how much it cost you to have flowers at your iwddeng. I am thinking about having roses. How much did it cost you to have flowers at your iwddeng? What type of flowers, and was it through a florist. Now on a second note, I know how to make boutonnieres and corsages on my own, and bouquets.. So we were just gonna by bunches of roses and do it ourselves. =) I am trying to figure how much we are saving based on how much you guys spent on flowers for your iwddeng.

Many moons ago, back in 2010 Company Flowers had a blog of sorts.  Then we got busy and/ or I got lazy and the blog went to sleep.

Well we're waking it up here and now.

We'll be posting pictures of weddings and parties ,shots of the beloved shop dog Nika and random bits of information you might find interesting.

I'll hook each post up to Facebook so you'll be able to drop everything you're doing and rush over and give it a read.  And hopefully leave a comment.  Bloggers LIVE for interaction.

So tell your friends, tell your neighbors CoFLo is back and we've got cupcakes!

So so so pretty. Sending you the best from Texas along with wishes for a wonderful Spring in Paris, xx’s Marsha Harris Scott is Splenderosa

We checked out a lot of Toronto ddneiwg stores but found my shower favours here + the ddneiwg favours. no complaints and they were pretty cheap compared to the US stores.

Hello friends

I think that you are looking for some truly special and surprising X-mas gifts for your loved ones and friends.
I had the same problem so I was searching for such gifts on the internet for several days. I would like to give
truly unusual and amazing gifts to my loved ones and the holidays are just around the corner.
I had luck to find the great on-line store WEXONMART On-Line. These guys has gifts I was looking for. So I had luck to get gifts
which will be really enjoyed by my loved ones. I bought the unigue set of the garnet crown jewerly for my mom, the beautiful vase
and the garnet necklace for my daughter. I bought the absolutely gorgeous antique pink porcelain phone for myself. I was looking for such phone pretty
long time. The guys in WEXONMART have a lot of unique items available, I think that you can make great deal with them too.

Best regards
